I’ve had a lot of discussions about hobbies with my husband. To put it bluntly, neither of us are “hobby” people. We both like working and staying busy and not to mention total homebodies. Its not to say that we don’t WANT hobbies, but its that we like too many things to invest in one area of hobby-ing that we never end up investing the time in them.
We both love creating and both of us do “creating” for our jobs. I am a graphic designer and my husband is a software developer so in one sense our previous hobbies have become our jobs.
There’s the saying, “Do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” but, Somehow, even if you LOVE what you do, the luster of what you once enjoyed to do seems to fade when you are required to do it in order to make the money you need to survive.
Don’t get me wrong, the joy of designing is still there for me, but at some point between the long hours spent at a desk and the repetitiveness of the commute home the idea of “loving what you do” gets lost in the “planned” hours of the day. Everyone should feel fulfilled in their career, BUT I think that the most fulfillment comes when you choose, in spite of the tiredness you feel after work, to partake in something “unplanned” and entirely for enjoyment.
So Will and I are on a soul quest (if you want to call it that) to find and invest in a hobby. We’ve created a short term bucket list of things we want to do together and are taking the next couple months to invest in doing things that make us happy.
We’ve put the house cleaning aside for a day to let ourselves truly enjoy each other’s company and the world around us.
What are some hobbies you have?
